2010 is the year of CLAY!
Devon has a great tradition of working with clay, going back hundreds of years and West Town Farm has an abundance of clay under the soil. Two years ago organicARTS started renovating part of the grain barn to use as a workshop which could be used for clay work. We had an award of materials from B & Q; were given lots of equipment; fundraised to employ a builder and used a lot of volunteer help. There is still a little way to go but it is now in a useable condition. It will shortly be fully linked up to water and electricity and further grant applications and fund raising will follow! It is already being used for educational visits; away-days; ‘Friends’ days and workshops. We are planning to run series of workshops this year all relating to clay and there will be some taster sessions at our open days. Workshops will include Cob Sculpture; Wildlife Homes; Making a Herd of Cows; Tile making (including the flora around the farm); Clay Play; Bead and Jewellery making and a Bonfire Firing.
We have an informal group of clay workers who are helping to develop this work, if you’re interested in joining them contact email
